The Book Slam on Clubhouse (also referred to as “The Book Slam”) is the brainchild of author, professional business development consultant, and digital marketing strategist N. D. “Indy” Brennan. The virtual property is sponsored by Atlanta-based MADDCity Media. The concept ignited in the form of a whimsical inspiration sparked during a creative brainstorming session held in the summer of 2021 between Indy and client-friend Tenika Deshawn, the CEO of Pittsburgh based Lady Carpenter Inc.

HOW DID THE BOOK SLAM BEGIN?
Ms. Deshawn impressed upon him the impact she believed they each could make by creating their own space within the relatively new Clubhouse mobile app at the time. As an author and seasoned digital marketing executive, N. D. “Indy” Brennan recognized the increased equity an author could achieve through a live reading of their works. The two extemporaneously created rooms during the call related to their professional interest and experience. One of the two rooms created by Indy Brennan was The Book Slam on Clubhouse. Ms. Deshawn became one of the first hosts of the show alongside N. D. “Indy” Brennan and Hotelier Bruce S. Jordan.

WHAT IS THE BOOK SLAM ON CLUBHOUSE?
The Book Slam on Clubhouse is a platform that affords published and pending authors an opportunity to practice or perfect the live oratorical presentation of their books. Every Tuesday at 8 PM (Eastern Standard Time), an average of 7 to 10 authors from around the world perform live readings of their books in front of a virtual audience. Since the inception of The Book Slam, it is free to listen and to perform. Each speaker is given 3 primary requests prior to reading: (1) “Tell everyone a little about yourself”; (2) “Tell them about the book you will be reading from”; and (3) “What inspired you to become an author?” After this brief introduction, each author is given a maximum of 7 minutes to present their books in the most innovative and engaging ways they can through a live reading.

The Book Slam on Clubhouse provides an opportunity for the author to introduce the book to listeners in its proper context. Authors are also provided instant feedback on their book or book’s concept and their performance by other authors and business professionals, which have included marketing executives, publicists, publishers, journalists, influencers, social media strategists, public speakers, performing poets, business executives, author coaches, life coaches, and more. Critiques are extended in the spirit of positive reinforcement and helping the author to become their best and most impactful self.

BREAKOUTS VERSIONS
On April 7, 2022, the European Book Slam on Clubhouse debuted. Authors from Europe, Africa, and western Asia interested in performing in the U.S.-based Book Slam found it difficult due to the time difference. When the U.S.-based show started at 8 PM (EST), it was 1:00 AM in the United Kingdom (GMT) for example. In order to provide authors within these regions with a more convenient solution, the European Book Slam platform was created. The European Book Slam is featured every Thursday starting at 8 PM (GMT), or 3 PM (EST). The show is hosted by creator N. D. “Indy” Brennan and publisher and author J. L. Grant. Past performing authors include J. Edwards Holt, S. Lewis Campbell, Amber Myers, Poetess Erica Donaldson-Ellison, Douglas Gardham, Adam Andrews Johnson, and Theresa Dorsey, Andrea M. Thompson, Sionna Trenz, Robert Hickman, Connie Johnson, LIbby Warner, Nina Aouilk, and Teriece Cherell.

In an effort to further expand the literary and professional diversity of The Book Slam on Clubhouse, two new hosts were introduced with slightly different performance agendas. Poet Samuel Rain Benjamin, a recurring feature on The Book Slam on Clubhouse, hosted the first show featuring 9 professionally performing poet-authors on April 26, 2022, under the title “Samuel Rain Benjamin presents Dark Man Blues (Poetry Night)”. This event takes place on The Book Slam on Clubhouse every fourth Tuesday of the month, and it features published poet-authors from around the world. The title of the show is an homage to Samuel Rain Benjamin’s poetry book titled “Dark Man Blues.” Samuel Rain Benjamin is a published author of an array of sensuous poetry books. He also has a background working in the music industry under such legends as Stevie Wonder. He is a notable poet-author who performs live readings around the country. Past performing poet-authors for the show include Lala DeVille, Andrew Horner, the Poet Laureate of Prince William County Kim B. Miller, Slam Poetry Champion The Poet Has Spoken, Artie Foxx, Infamous Lyricist, Melanie “The Voice” Johnson, Lawin Bulatao, Ray Jane, the Pretty Provocative Poet, Youcef Mekki, Prachi Tanna, Stir America, Sarah Bellum Mental, Danny Weller, MyKNichelle Kendra, James L. Rencher Jr. (SIr Lawrence), and J. T. Shannon.
Then CEO LaQuita Parks, another published author previously featured on The Book Slam on Clubhouse, partnered with the show to begin hosting a night curated by her publishing house, Pa-Pro-Vi Publishing. The inaugural show was held on July 12, 2022 celebrating black women authors and professionals. This show featured 10 published black women authors, while honoring past and present-day black women authors who helped pave the way. Black women honored during this first show include Nikki Giovanni, Zora Neale Hurston, Jesmyn Ward, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Maya, Angelou, Phyllis Wheatley, and Audre Lorde. Past performing authors include Dr. Velma Bagby, Dr. Monica Y. Jackson, Chanelle Wesley Coleman, Lachelle Adkins, Minister Porcha Mays, Dr. Alvina Ryan, Jacquiline Cox, and Tanisha Bankston. CEO LaQuita Parks hosts the Pa-Pro-Vi show on The Book Slam on Clubhouse every second Tuesday of the month.
